NEO Fight Championship 2019 Amateur MMA
NEO Fight Championship went down last October 19th at GSF MMA Academy and it was a great experience for the growing grass root MMA in Thailand.
We had the pleasure to catch up with the event organizer and president of the Thai MMA Federation (TMMAF) and president of ONE Championship Thailand, Plai Jitinat, who explained to us the rule set for this tournament.
As many want to get into the MMA world but they are still not confident to get punched in the face, NEO Fight Championship events allow fighters from any experience to engage in a MMA fight thanks to the special rule set designed to limit damage to the face.
However the event also included a second rule set much closer to the normal amateur MMA for more experienced fighters.
TKD or BJJ practitioners for example, were able to get in to the cage without much experience in MMA
Manager of GSF MMA Academy, Dean Bourke, is doing a great job by allowing this event to take place at the GSF and creating other events alike in the nightclub “Skylight” just upstairs from the gym itself.
Very interesting is the plan to organize fights with Thai prison inmates where the winners maybe allowed to reduce their sentences or even get a contract with GSF for a world championship.
We’ll definitely keep an eye on these events and try to document as much as possible.
Among the coaches at the GSF we’ve had the honor to talk with BJJ 5th degree black belt Prof. Silvio Braga, who is committed to bring the martial arts lifestyle to Thailand and hopefully to make some MMA world champions out of Muay Thai fighters.
Knowing the “laziness” around kids in Bangkok, he is pointing out that the discipline from martial arts, especially Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is the best way to improve character.
